Solid Waste Disposal & Recycling

Could you please tell me who I need to speak to about setting up recycling at our house?

The Town contracts with a company to do curbside collections of recyclables on a weekly basis. If you do not have the container that was originally dispensed to the residence, you may pick one up at the Transfer Station. To find out what day they come in your neighborhood and the “yes, recycles” and “no, do not recycles”, please call our Public Works Department (which is responsible for solid waste disposal and recycling) at 860.848.7473.

What are the hours at the Transfer Station?

The transfer station is open on Wednesday and Thursday 8 am to 4 pm. and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 3 pm. The transfer station is closed Monday and Tuesday. It is also closed on New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Sunday before Memorial Day, Independence Day, Sunday before Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Where do I dispose of my household refuse?

There are two options for disposal. Non-recyclable waste may be brought to the Town’s Transfer Station on Route 163 at the intersection of Chesterfield Road. Call 860.848.0401 for entry and permit information, or go to the Public Works Department page here on this site. The other option is a private contractor, which can be located in the Yellow Pages.

Are there other items that can be recycled?

In addition to mixed papers (newspapers, junk mail, magazines, gift wrap, etc.) and cans, bottles, and plastic containers which are both picked up curbside, residents are encouraged to bring other acceptable recyclable items to the Transfer Station. These can be dropped off at no charge. Please visit the Public Works Department page to see the list.
