Public Safety Awareness from the Montville WPCA: The Connecticut utilities has reported an increase in situations where scam artists impersonate utility workers to gain access to resident's personal information, their homes and or businesses. On occasion, a Montville WPCA employee may come to your door unannounced. For safety reasons, we are informing you of how we identify who we are. The WPCA uses a three-point identification method which includes a marked vehicle with stickers, identifiable clothing and a badge in plain view. Below are some of the best practices to protect yourself, your family and your home or business:
- Call the WPCA to verify unscheduled visits at 860-848-3630
- Never allow anyone inside your home who you don't know or haven't scheduled an appointment with in advance
- Never make a payment over the phone in a response to a solicited call threatening to disconnect your service if you don't pay immediately
- To check your account, call the number on your bill; never use a call-back number provided by a caller
- The WPCA does not accept prepaid debit cards, bitcoins or gift cards for bill payment
- WPCA employees will never ask you for money or collect it while working out in the field
- Never give your personal information to anyone including your billing account information, Social Security number, ATM pin number, etc..
- Don't trust caller ID, even if it displays Montville WPCA; criminals routinely use caller ID 'spoofing' scams to fool customers into thinking they're talking to a real employee
If you suspect fraudulent activity, hang up and report it to your local police department and the WPCA at 860-848-3630.
Gardner Lake Drawdown 2024: On or about November 1, 2024, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) will initiate a 3-4-foot drawdown to Gardner Lake in an attempt to combat the invasive aquatic vegetation, erosion control and the preventing of ice damage to shoreline properties. The drawdown will be managed until March 1, 2025, in order to restore the normal water surface elevation by early April 2025.
